Children in Charters Towers are choosing entrepreneurship in droves

Will Charters Towers become the most entrepreneurial rural town in Australia? Well, it certainly looks like that is possible.

Having spent the week hanging out with locals, talking to local business leaders and schools, I have realised one thing - that this town is ready to choose entrepreneurship to sit along their traditional industries of tourism, agriculture and mining.

I have had small children as young as 5 years old say that they want to be an entrepreneur, although their annuciation wasn't quite there, the intention certainly was.

There are two standout school Principals in Charters Towers that have entrepreneurship as part of their mandate. They are proactive in seeking advice and mentors for students on entrepreneurship and creating career options for their students. Those schools are Millchester State Primary School and the best private school in town, Blackheath and Thornburgh. I cannot speak highly enough of the work they are doing with students to educate them on what their potential is and the fact that it is never too early to start.

I think we can expect a few very young entrepreneurs coming out of Charters Towers in the next 12 months and for that, you have to give the kudos to the school Principals driving the change.

I spoke to students on:

  • Starting from nothing and building a multimillion dollar business
  • Failures that only set you up for success
  • Falling down and picking yourself up, and trying again no matter how many times it takes
  • Being respectful of your elders, having good manners and making sure your values come through in everything you do
  • Being proud of coming from Charters Towers and making that part of your point of difference
  • Seeing the world as your potential audience, not just the town
  • The value of a positive attitude and how that in itself will change your outcomes
  • How to ignore those who say that it's not possible

There has never been a more exciting time to live in Charters Towers. While people are doing it tough, there is light at the end of the tunnel and anyway that the community can work together to make things happen, will be the platform for change.

The World Incubator is one of the most exciting things to ever come out of Charters Towers. The people who are putting their hands up to be in it, are amazing. I can't wait to share them with you and the rest of the world.
