Tech Geek Heads To Charters Towers To Do Hands-on Mentoring
There are a few things that only good friends can ask, and I did that yesterday. Firstly, I asked a very private man in Charters Towers to share his multi-million dollar local story about selling products nationally, from Charters Towers. It's important people know that this can be done, but not without a lot of hard work, determination, focus and a few heart aches along the way.
To build a business there are many things to consider, and there is never a week where everything goes smoothly. People will disappoint you, and you will disappoint yourself, but if your glass is half full, then everything will work out in the end.
Now, this man is far from a nerd, he is a good country bloke.
The nerd I am talking about, who I say with affection and an emphasis on just how intelligent he is and how much he prefer coding than interacting with others. The picture you see on this blog is his. He is interesting. He builds technology, and will code for 24 hours straight - just like what you see in the movies.
His name is Linus Chang. He is highly inspirational, and knows how to build highly successful technology businesses. He currently is the Entrepreneurs Organisation's Acceleration Chair for EO Victoria and donates his time to early stage businesses that are almost at the million dollar mark, but not quite.
He was apt in being part of this program. Firstly, he is dying to take me camping and has asked if he could come up to Charters Towers for a few days in September with me to mentor in person Nicky and Bernie Kruger (Rural Australia Technologies), to help them get their startup to the next stage. Camping did come up in the conversation so a few locals I know can definitely expect a call.
Imagine having someone like this who has successfully built and sold a number of technology companies coming to Charters Towers from Melbourne to help out two of our locals for free - just because he wants to help them get their startup to the next level?
This is what The World Incubator is all about. It is about giving, being kind and generous.
I finally read the article which was full of inaccuracies which only the journalist and editor can take blame for, as they were clearly informed that 10 people where in the incubator, and that stories in the Marketing Eye Magazine were potentials - not accepted people in the incubator. When they were interviewed, they were told exactly that by Eliza Rogers. It was an opportunity for them to be given international exposure in a magazine distributed in Australia and America.
Shame on Northern Miner for either not reading the article, or deliberately reporting false information. Whether they make it in the incubator or not, giving profile to Charters Towers is a positive, not a negative.
The journalist and editor need to wake up and smell the roses. Their readership is small. If more people move to Charters Towers because there is jobs there, more people will read your newspaper. Can't you see the irony here? That more people will read this blog that I am writing right now, then that read your newspaper. I don't want your newspaper to become obsolete, and the fact that it does create jobs means something. But really????? Writing knowingly inaccurate content with a headline that is a complete lie (and you knew it and were informed of it), is bad journalism. Not good journalism.
We choose to ignore. We won't be seeking the Northern Miner for stories in the future. We will tell our own stories and support www.charterstowersplusmore.com.au, a local set up a website that shares positive and/or important news. We will send our media releases to the Townsville Bulletin and other more worthy, and credible sources along with www.charterstowersplusmore.com.au.
